Catania : From the Future to the Baroque Time

We started the day by visiting the University of Catatnia and more precisely the Architecture Department.

We had the chance to attend a master class on the use of Natural Waste in the construction industry. In Sicily, the main resource used is ..........

Cleaning the streets after each eruption or gust of wind represented a real economic challenge for the local government. So a law was enforced to act on waste management. Plus, the weight of the ash represented a real danger for the rigidity of the roofs.

To fix this problem searchers from the university found a way to reuse lava ash into the building industry: add lava ash into the concrete as a form of natural insulation.

Lava ash has good thermical properties. As a result searchers created a "super insulator" from natural waste.

In the afternoon, we visited the historic district of Catania and did some shopping as well. The emblem of the city is the elephant. It was really nice and beautiful.

To fresh us up, we decided to swim in the sea near our guest-house, it was a bit cold but it was fun!
